Imprinted AI vs an AI Clone
Both promise a version of you inside the machine. They are built in opposite directions, and the direction is the whole difference in what you get.
An AI clone is assembled from output you already published. Videos, posts, transcripts, books, emails. A model reads the corpus and infers a persona from it.
An Imprinted AI is assembled from decisions you actually made, captured at the moment you made them, with the reason attached. Nothing enters that you did not decide.
The decision is not in the output.
The first problem: reversing the arrow loses the person
Your published work is the result of a decision procedure. The clone tries to run that arrow in reverse, from the result back to the procedure.
That reversal is not clean, and it is not a quality-of-model issue.
Many different decision procedures produce the same artifact. A page you wrote could have come from a hundred plausible reasoning paths, and the finished page carries no marking that says which one it was. So the machine reading it has to choose one. It chooses the most probable.
Here is what that means in practice. The most probable author of your work is a competent generic professional in your field. That is the reconstruction you get. Not you. The averaged person who could have plausibly produced those words.
And your judgment is not in the average. Your judgment is the deviation from it. It is the place you went against the obvious call, the thing you refused that everyone else in your category ships, the rule you follow that nobody told you. Inference reaches for the typical explanation by construction, so it removes the atypical part first.
The clone is therefore most wrong exactly where you are most valuable.
The second problem: it has never seen you reject anything
Look at what a clone is trained on. Your published work is your approved work. Everything you killed is missing from it. The draft you scrapped, the offer you refused to run, the hire you passed on, the strategy that looked good on paper and set off something you could not name.
None of that was published. None of it is in the corpus.
Now consider what a standard actually is. A standard is a line. Things above it ship, things below it do not. You cannot locate a line by looking at only one side of it. A clone has seen a large pile of things that cleared your bar and zero things that failed it, so it can tell you what you like and has no information at all about where you stop.
This is why cloned output tends to be pleasant, on-voice and slightly wrong in a way people find hard to articulate. It is reproducing the region without the edge. The edge is the part you were paid for.
Capture inverts this. A rejection with a reason attached is the highest-value thing you can put into an Imprint, and it is the one thing a clone will never have access to, because you did not publish it and you never will.
The third problem: the errors do not look like errors
When a clone invents the reasoning behind one of your decisions, that invention comes out in your voice, with your cadence, at your usual level of confidence.
Nothing on the surface separates it from the parts that are true.
So the errors do not get caught and removed. They sit in the system and later work builds on them. Inference stacks on inference. After enough of that, the picture is a blend of things you decided and things the machine decided you would decide, and there is no marking left to sort them. At that point the layer cannot be cleaned. It has to be rebuilt.
Captured judgment carries provenance: every entry knows where it came from. That single property is what makes captured and inferred material separable a year later, which is the only reason the pile stays trustworthy as it grows.

When a clone is genuinely the right tool
There is a real job here and it is worth saying plainly, because pretending otherwise would be the kind of positioning nobody should trust.
A clone is the right choice when the task is representation at volume and being generically you is acceptable. Answering the same audience question for the four hundredth time. A voice for material you have already written. Presence in places you cannot personally be, where the cost of a bland answer is close to zero.
In those jobs the averaging is not a defect. It is the product. You want the median version of you, cheap and available at three in the morning.
The mismatch starts when a clone is pointed at work where the value came from you not being median. Deciding what to build. Killing something that looks fine. Pricing. Hiring. Anything where the right answer was never obvious and you were being paid for the call rather than the wording.
A quick way to tell which one you have
Give the system a decision you have never made publicly. A real one, with a non-obvious answer that you know.
A clone will answer in your voice, immediately, with confidence, and it will give you the reasonable answer. An Imprinted AI will either apply a rule you actually set, and be able to point at where you set it, or it will have nothing and say so.
The second behaviour is the valuable one, and it is the one that looks worse in a demo.

What is the difference between an AI clone and an Imprinted AI?
An AI clone is assembled by inferring a persona from work a person already published. An Imprinted AI is built from decisions the person made, captured as they made them, with the reason attached. The clone reproduces how someone sounds. The Imprinted AI reproduces how they rule. Because the clone works backwards from finished artifacts, it has to invent the reasoning that produced them, and its inventions are written in the same voice as the parts it got right.
Can an AI clone learn my judgment over time?
Only if something is feeding it your actual decisions. A clone that is trained on published output and then left alone gets no new information about how you decide, because nothing you publish records what you rejected or why. The mechanism that would fix it is capture, and a system doing capture is no longer a clone.
Why does my AI clone sound like me but get things wrong?
Voice and judgment are recoverable from different things. Voice is fully present in published work, so a model reads it off cleanly. Judgment is not present in published work at all, because the artifact shows the option that survived and nothing about the options that did not. So the half that is easy to recover comes back accurate and the half that matters comes back invented.
Is a clone of a person accurate enough for business decisions?
It is accurate on anything you have already done publicly and unreliable on anything you have not, which inverts what you need. The decisions worth delegating are the ones without precedent in your published work. Those are precisely the ones the clone has no evidence for.
Who owns an AI clone of me?
In most cases the platform hosting it, under the terms attached to that platform. This is a practical difference rather than a philosophical one. A persona assembled on a vendor's system can be priced, throttled, migrated or discontinued by that vendor. A captured record of your own decisions, held in your own systems, cannot.
