The Five Levels of Knowing
Knows you may be the most abused phrase in technology. Netflix knows what you watch. Your CRM knows what you bought. Those are two different claims, and there are three more above them.
The Five Levels of Knowing (framework). Five distinct things meant by an AI system knowing a person: what you produced, what you decided, how you decide, who is deciding, and who you are becoming. Not degrees of one property. Each level requires its own kind of evidence.
The five
Level 1. It knows what you produced.
Your emails, content, files, numbers, past work. Any competent system can take these in, and most already have. This is the base layer, it is genuinely useful, and it is where almost every product claiming to know you is operating.
Level 2. It knows what you decided.
The offer you ran. The customer you took. The campaign you killed. The price you changed. The record often shows the choice, so this is reachable from documents and history.
Most AI memory stops here, and stopping here is not a product failure. It is where records run out.
The Wall
Below it, AI knows what you did. Above it, AI begins to understand why you did it.
Level 3. It knows how you decide.
Not the choice, the judgment underneath it. Enough to face a situation neither of you has seen and still make the call you would have made. This is where a system stops being a record of your past and starts being able to act in your place.
Level 4. It knows who is deciding.
Your wiring. Your strengths. Your blind spots. The patterns that make one quality an asset in one moment and a liability in the next. Enough to tell real curiosity from the next distraction, or a high standard from another perfectionist loop.
Level 5. It knows who you are becoming.
Not the future your history will produce by default. The one you have chosen. Without this level, AI can help you become more of who you have always been. With it, it can help you become who you decided to be.
The part that gets misread
A numbered list invites one reading: a maturity ladder, where you climb by doing more of what got you to the level below. Feed it more documents, give it a bigger window, add retrieval, and you rise.
That reading is wrong in a way that costs people a year.
They are five layers, and each needs different evidence.
Files and records can fill Levels 1 and 2 completely. They reveal what you produced and what you chose, and they do it well. Point them at Level 3 and they return nothing, no matter how many of them there are, because the material was never in them.
The reason is the one stated at the Wall. A finished piece of work is the option that survived. The decision was the moment of choosing it over the alternatives, and that moment leaves no trace in the artifact. The three options that were killed are not in the document. The reason is not in the document. What is in the document is the result.
So Level 3 has to come from real verdicts captured as they are made, together with something that keeps those verdicts coherent as your judgment changes. That is a different input, not more of the same input.

Level 5 is worth pausing on, because it is the only one that cannot be observed at all. Every other level has some evidence trail, however partial. A chosen future has none by definition. It has not happened, nothing about your history implies it, and any attempt to derive it from your trajectory returns your trajectory. It exists only because someone decided it and said so.
Why this matters more as systems get more autonomous
While you are reviewing everything, the levels are close to academic. You supply the missing ones yourself, live, without noticing.
The distance between Level 2 and Level 3 becomes concrete at the moment a system runs work you do not check. A Level 2 system, asked to handle something new, does the most reasonable thing anyone would do. That is a defensible answer and it is not yours, and the gap between those two things is the entire reason the business is worth what it is worth.

Where does most AI memory stop?
At Level 2. It can retrieve your past accurately, including the choices you made, and it still has no access to the mind that made them. That is not a limitation of any particular product. Records simply do not go any further.
What is the Wall?
The break between Levels 2 and 3. Below it, a system knows what you did. Above it, it begins to understand why you did it. The break exists because finished work does not contain the decision that produced it, so no amount of reading your output backwards gets across.
Can I get to Level 3 with a bigger context window?
No, and this is the most common assumption worth dropping. A larger window means more of Levels 1 and 2 are visible at once. It adds volume on the near side of the break rather than moving anything across it. The missing material was never in the record to be loaded.
Do I have to climb the levels in order?
They are layers, not steps. Files fill the first two immediately for almost anyone. Level 3 starts accumulating from the moment something begins capturing real rulings, which can start today and cannot be backdated. Levels 4 and 5 are a different exercise again, and Level 5 is the only one that cannot be observed at all, because it is chosen rather than exhibited.
