Question
Why does my AI output feel generic?
Because generic is the correct answer to the question you asked. It is only generic relative to a standard you are holding and never supplied.
The output is not defective
Ask for a launch email with no further constraint and you get the middle of every launch email ever written. That is not a malfunction. It is the honest response to a question with no other information in it.
The reason it grates is that you are not neutral about launch emails. You have opinions you have never written down, formed by things that worked and things that cost you. Those opinions are what you are measuring the output against, and they were not in the room.
So the correct description is not that the output is bad. It is that it is centred, and you wanted it displaced, in a specific direction, by an amount you never named.
The diagnostic, which takes ten seconds
There are two completely different problems that both feel like generic, and they need opposite fixes. This separates them.
When the sentence comes easily, that sentence is the most valuable thing produced in the whole session, more valuable than the output you are about to ship, because it is a rule and the output is one artifact. It is also about to evaporate, which is a separate problem.
When no sentence comes, and you are just circling the draft feeling dissatisfied, the fault is upstream. You have not decided what the thing is for. No amount of standard-supplying fixes an unmade decision, and this is the case where more instructions genuinely will not help.
Why the obvious fix makes it worse
The instinct is to add adjectives. Be bolder. Be punchier. Write like a human. Do not write like AI.
Follow the mechanism through. Asked to be bold, the system returns the centre of bold writing. You have not left the average, you have moved to a different average, and this one is frequently more annoying, because it is average and performing confidence about it.
The same holds for write like me when what it has to go on is your published work. It can match your sentence lengths and your habits of phrase, and it will still make the call you would not have made, because how you sound and how you rule are different things and only one of them is visible in the archive.
Style instructions move the surface. Generic is not a surface property. It is a position, and the only thing that moves a position is a standard.
Why better models do not solve it
A stronger model produces a better average. That is a real improvement and it raises the floor for everyone at once, which is precisely why it does not solve this.
The thing you are objecting to is not a quality level. It is being at the centre. Everyone's centre moves up together, and the distance between the centre and your particular line is unchanged. If anything the complaint sharpens: the output gets good enough that the remaining gap is entirely made of things only you can see.
What actually removes it
Supplying the standard. Which is not the same as stating your preferences, because the preferences you can state are the ones you already knew you had, and those were never the interesting part.
It means catching the correction at the moment you make it, with the reason attached, and keeping it somewhere that survives the session. The reason is what matters. Make paragraph two less certain is a note about one paragraph. Never let the promise get ahead of the proof is a standard, and it will be right in cases that have not happened yet.
The signal that this is working is simple to check. The next job of the same kind starts closer to your line than the last one did. If every job starts from the same place, nothing is accumulating and you are paying the same correction forever.
Frequently asked
Why does my AI output feel generic?
Because generic is the correct answer to the question you asked. With no standard supplied, the model returns the centre of everything ever written on the subject, which is the definition of average. It only reads as generic to you because you are holding a standard it was never given.
Why doesn't telling it to be bolder work?
Because that is a style instruction and this is a decision problem. Asked to be bolder, it returns the average of bold writing, which is the same failure one level down and often more irritating, because now it is average and pleased with itself.
How can I tell generic from simply wrong?
Try to say what is wrong with it in one sentence. If you can, you have a standard and it was not supplied, and that sentence is the thing worth capturing. If you cannot, the output is not generic, it is unspecified, and the brief was incomplete. Those look identical and need different fixes.
Do better models fix it?
They raise the floor, which is worth having, and they do not change the mechanism. A better model produces a better average. Average is the thing you are objecting to, and it is not a quality level, it is a position.
What actually removes it?
Supplying the standard, which means capturing your corrections rather than restating your preferences. The test is whether the next job of the same kind starts closer to your line than the last one did. If every job starts from the same place, nothing is accumulating.
Where this sits
A way to count the gap rather than feel it is at articulation gap. Where the correction goes when it is not discarded is at Imprint. The category is defined at what Imprinted AI is.
