Apprenticeship without the decade
The years were never instruction time. The routine cases take months. The rest of it is spent waiting for rare cases to happen while both people are standing there.
Apprenticeship without the decade (noun phrase). The compression of the apprenticeship timeline by capturing a master's judgment at every decision, rather than depending on an apprentice being present when exceptional cases occur. The learning mechanism is unchanged. What changes is the wait.
Why the deepest craft has always moved this way
Some knowledge cannot be handed over in a document. Not because nobody has tried, but because the person holding it cannot state it. They know what to do and cannot fully explain how they know.
For all of history there was exactly one method that moved it anyway. Put the novice next to the master. Then let the novice watch.
Not for a week. For years.
What the years were actually for
This is the part that gets misread, and the misreading is what makes the timeline look immovable.
The routine cases arrive quickly. Whatever the craft is, the common situations show up in the first few months, repeatedly, and a capable novice picks them up about as fast as they appear.
The strange customer. The misleading symptom. The one case where the standard move is exactly wrong, and the master looks at it and does something unexpected. That moment is where the transfer happens, because it reveals a boundary no description of the standard move would have contained.
Those cases cannot be summoned. They occur at their own rate, and the length of an apprenticeship was set by how long you had to be present before enough of them had occurred. The decade was arrival time.
The second bottleneck, which is worse
Even standing next to someone for ten years, the apprentice only sees the decisions made in their presence.
Most calls are not made in anyone's presence. They happen while reading a proposal alone, in the twenty seconds after a call ends, on the way to something else. The master does not narrate them, because there is nobody to narrate them to and because the narration would come out as a rationalisation composed afterwards.
So the traditional apprentice was catching a sample: the exceptional cases that happened to occur during working hours while they were in the room and paying attention. Everything else went unwitnessed, and when the master retired it went with them.
What actually changed
Not the learning. Enough real cases with the call attached, and the pattern becomes visible without anyone having to turn it into a rule. That was true in a workshop in 1650 and it is true now.
What changed is that presence stopped being the constraint.
Something can now be alongside every decision, not the fraction that happened in front of an observer. It captures what was in front of you, the call you made, the reason, and what happened next. It does not need the exceptional case to coincide with someone else's schedule, because it is present for all of them.
Which produces the compression, and it is worth being precise about where the compression comes from. Not faster learning. A far higher capture rate on the events that were always the slow part.

What this does not claim
It does not claim anything about how long it takes a person to get good. Your own learning is not compressed by any of this, and the master whose judgment is being captured still spent the decades that produced it. There is no route around that and nothing here pretends there is.
What used to be true is that the transfer took as long as the acquisition. Passing on twenty years of judgment meant somebody standing next to you for a significant fraction of twenty years, and even then they got a sample.
That equivalence is the part that broke.

Getting the transfer that an apprenticeship produces without the years it traditionally took. Is this claiming AI learns faster than a person?
No. The claim is narrower and does not depend on that. A person can only witness the decisions they are physically present for, and a master makes most of their calls alone. Capture removes the presence requirement, so a far higher proportion of the exceptional cases are seen. Same learning, fewer missed events.
Do you have to explain your reasoning for this to work?
No, and requiring it would break it. Masters have always been poor at explaining, which is a property of the knowledge rather than a failure of communication. What transfers is enough real cases with the call attached. The pattern becomes visible across them without anyone turning it into a rule.
What does this not compress?
Your own learning. Nothing here shortens the time it takes a person to become good at something, and the master still had to spend the decades that produced the judgment being captured. What compresses is the transfer, which was previously the same length as the acquisition and no longer has to be.
